Homemade Hamburger Hash

Ingredients

  • 1 lb 450 g ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 3 medium potatoes peeled and diced into small cubes
  • 1 red bell pepper diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme or oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder optional
  • ¼ cup beef broth or water
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup optional, for slight sweetness
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley optional

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the diced potatoes and cook for about 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to turn golden and slightly tender.
  • Add the onion and bell pepper. Cook for another 3–4 minutes until softened.
  • Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet. Add the ground beef to the empty side and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  • Stir everything together. Add garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, thyme, and chili powder. Mix well.
  • Pour in the beef broth and add ketchup if using. Stir and let simmer uncovered for about 8–10 minutes, until potatoes are fully tender and the mixture thickens slightly.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Sprinkle with parsley before serving.
