- Bisquick mix
- Ground beef-Â I used lean ground beef, but ground turkey or chicken works well and makes a great leaner option.
- Veggies-Â diced white onion, diced green peppers, can of Rotel with green chiles, and frozen corn
- Taco seasoning- you can use a packet or make some Homemade Taco Seasoning
- Sour cream: Greek yogurt can be used in a pinch.
- Mayonnaise: Use real mayonnaise.
- Cheese:Â I used Colby Jack but you can use whatever cheese you prefer.
How To Make John Wayne Casserole
- Step 1:Â Add Bisquick and water to a bowl and mix until well combined.Â
- Step 2:Â Prep a baking dish by spraying it with nonstick cooking spray and transfer the Bisquick dough mixture to it. Spread the dough out to reach the sides of the dish.
- Step 3:Â Add ground beef, peppers and onion to a large skillet and cook until ground beef is browned and veggies are tender. Drain excess fat and grease from the browned ground beef, pepper, and onion mixture.
- Step 4:Â Add the can of Rotel, corn, and taco seasoning to the mix. Stir and cook.Â
- Step 5:Â Transfer the taco meat mixture to the dish the.
- Step 6:Â In a separate bowl, mix sour cream, mayo, and some of the shredded cheese until combined.Â
- Step 7:Â Spread this sour cream mixture over the ground beef mixture.Â
- Step 8:Â Finish off with the remaining shredded cheese before placing the dish in the preheated oven to bake uncovered until the cheese is melted and may start to turn golden brown.

- A can of drained black beans or pinto beans adds extra texture and protein. This could help bulk out this main dish even more.
- Try Monterey Jack, cheddar, pepper Jack, or a Mexican blend instead of Colby Jack.
